How they work

Businesses are continually evolving and Categoric can help facilitate this constant change by providing a system-independent framework for detection, notification, management and responses to changes within corporate data or applications.

How?
With our easy-to-use visual builder it is simple to create a representation of the desired business rule or business process.  In order to do this it is necessary to be able to describe or articulate the flow and outcome from the business scenario and rule.
Some examples of scenarios are:

  • Creating notifications based on business criteria – eg aged debtors > 90 days
  • Convert/extract information from various data sources and conform to a specification – eg read EDIFACT message and convert to XML
  • Extend the functionality of an existing system/application – eg add supplier rating to ERP system
  • Compliance checking – eg ensure segregation of duty control is not disabled

For each scenario, a logical sequence of core questions will need to be answered so that best representation of the process can be determined:

BAM and SCEM Process life cycle
Logical sequence of process steps

  1. When or under which circumstances should the rule/process be executed (initiation)?
  2. How is the content being retrieved (data/system integration)?
  3. What is being delivered (content)?
  4. Who or what should receive the content (recipients)?
  5. How is the content being delivered (delivery method)?
  6. Is a response or acknowledgement expected (reply/escalate)?

Each of these core questions is examined in greater detail in the section on "Process Design"

Once each of these questions has been answered it is possible to create a rule to achieve the outcome originally envisaged in the initial business scenario.

Ideal for non-technical users
The embedded technology shields the user from having to learn the many potentially different ways of interacting with the numerous systems that a business might contain.

A drag and drop interface allows easy visualisation and creation of the rule and it is here that the user will incorporate the information gleaned from the process design questions.

For business users who do not have the small amount of technical experience or expertise needed to create a rule (or even the time or desire to gain it!), our easy to follow methodology can be used to "de-couple" the process ownership and authorship from technical ownership, and can even conform to organisational change management processes.

Templates
A collection or "library" of alerts is often built up by an organisation, and this can remove the need to design a new rule from scratch -  simply reusing an existing template and changing one of the variables itemised above may be all that is needed to achieve the business scenario and outcome.

This empowerment of non-technical or non-specialist personnel means that the IT "bottleneck" that is often encountered can be removed and business and operational agility improved and enhanced.
